UPDATE: American Express Online closed down on November 30, 2001. If you are looking for a new ISP, check out arcZip. AmexOL provided the
following details on their site:
"We regret to inform you that American Express® has decided to discontinue the AmexOL pilot on November 30. Unfortunately, one of our vendors that was key to our providing the ISP service has filed for bankruptcy and we are not able to guarantee a reliable long-term operating service based on their financial situation."
NOTE: American Express Online requires you to be a card holder. They are not currently taking new members, but you can Apply Online for an American Express Card with no annual
fee now, so you are ready at when they reopen enrollments. However, it's been a while since they have taken new members, and it isn't clear when they will begin taking new members
again.
American Express Online offers discount internet access with fast, reliable connections. Unlike the large banner ads that most free internet service providers have, AMEX Online
does not have a banner ad bar (just like most other discount ISPs.)
If you use less than 75 hours a month, internet access is a reasonable $12.95 per month. However, unlimited internet access is $23.45 per month, but you only have to pay the extra
$10.50 on months that you go over 75 hours. Therefore, this ISP
is best for those that have moderate usage requirements.
Both web mail and POP3 email are available, so you can use whichever you prefer. AMEX Online also offers Usenet newsgroups through their
news server. Although they do not currently support the Macintosh operating system or Canadian dialup numbers, they plan to offer these depending on the response to their
initial phase of service.
AMEX Online is available exclusively for American Express card holders. This isn't really a disadvantage because you can easily Apply Online for an American Express Card with no annual fee.
Taking a few minutes to apply for a card is well worth it, because of the quality and service of they offer. Our testing shows and
user feedback generally confirms that AMEX Online offers some of the fastest, most stable connections. Plus if you ever have any problems, they have friendly customer service
available for free 24/7 via phone or email.
